~*~ Mao Zedong ~*~ Mao Zedong was born on December 26, 1893 and died on September 9, 1976. He was a Chinese political theorist and Communist leader. He led the People's Republic of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. Many Chinese believe that Mao laid the economic, technological and cultural foundations of modern China and that he transformed the country into a major world power. But on the contrary Mao's social-political programs are blamed for causing severe damage to the economy, culture, and society of China. Mao's policies from 1949 to 1975 are believed to cause the death of between 50 to 70 million people. Since Deng Xiaoping gained power in 1978, many of Mao Zedong's policies have been abandoned in favor of economic reforms.
